Validation of SAP S/4HANA according to GAMP 5: Digitalization meets Compliance

Digitalization is fundamentally changing IT processes and brings new opportunities for regulated industries such as pharma and MedTech, but also challenges in GxP compliance and validation. The DHC event demonstrated how SAP S/4HANA can be efficiently validated with modern tools while maintaining regulatory compliance according to GAMP 5.

Digitalization is fundamentally changing the way companies plan, implement, and operate their IT systems.

Digitalization is sustainably changing the way companies plan, implement, and operate their IT systems. For regulated industries such as pharma, medical technology, and life sciences, this means: new opportunities but also new challenges. Particularly in areas such as GxP compliance and software validation, companies must find ways to reconcile the digital transformation with regulatory requirements.

Exactly this challenge was the focus of the DHC event on validation of SAP S/4HANA according to GAMP 5. The goal was to demonstrate how modern tools and platforms can help reduce validation efforts without compromising on compliance.

From Documentation to Data Structure

Traditional validation has been paper and document-driven for decades. Today, a fundamental shift is taking place: the future lies in records-based validation.

Instead of static Word or PDF documents, all validation objects, such as user requirements, risks, specifications, and test cases, are digitally captured and linked together. Based on this structured data, a traceability matrix and risk assessments can be automatically generated.

The result: A consistent, audit-proof, and always traceable validation landscape that significantly reduces manual effort.

SAP Cloud ALM and Signavio as Enablers of Digital Transformation

With SAP Cloud ALM (Application Lifecycle Management), SAP offers a central cloud platform for project management, testing, validation, and operations. The solution is already in use by over 8,000 customers and is growing dynamically.

Cloud ALM is complemented by SAP Signavio, which provides powerful tools for process management and documentation. Together, both tools enable end-to-end digitalization of the validation process, from requirements through testing to risk assessment.

Test Management, Automation, and Change Control

A central component of modern validation strategies is automated test management. In SAP Cloud ALM, tests can be directly linked to requirements and risks. Results automatically flow back into the validation documentation, completely, traceably, and in an audit-proof manner.

For system updates as well, such as SAP Notes or regular public cloud releases, the integration ensures efficiency and security:

  • A change impact analysis identifies affected processes.
  • Automated regression tests are triggered.
  • The validation status remains up-to-date at all times.

Thus, change control becomes an integral part of the digital validation strategy.

Best Practices and Clean Core: Less Effort, More Standardization

Another important insight presented in the webinar: Companies that consistently rely on SAP Best Practices and the Clean Core approach benefit twice.

On one hand, validation effort is significantly reduced through standardized processes. On the other hand, the system becomes future-proof and remains updatable.

Using the example of the SAP process “J45”, it was demonstrated how a complete validation chain, from requirements to testing, process- and risk-based, can be mapped end-to-end digitally.

Technological foundation: DHC Smart Validation Accelerator

With the DHC Smart Validation Accelerator (SVA), DHC offers a practical solution for validating SAP systems efficiently and in a GxP-compliant manner.

Since the SVA stores all validation-relevant data outside of SAP Cloud ALM, a risk-based qualification of the SVA according to GAMP Category 1 is possible. Validation of Signavio, Cloud ALM, and test automation is not required.
The SVA enables:

  • Automated creation of validation documents
  • Versioning and traceability
  • Integration into existing tool landscapes

In combination with Cloud ALM, an End-to-End Digital Validation Platform is created that digitally links processes, requirements, risks, specifications, and tests, throughout the entire lifecycle.

Conclusion: Digitalization Makes Validation Future-proof

Lessons learned:

  • Validation remains indispensable, even in the cloud.
  • Without modern tools, however, it becomes an obstacle to innovation.
  • With Cloud ALM, Signavio, and the DHC Smart Validation Accelerator, compliance can be secured while simultaneously increasing the pace of innovation.

The future of SAP validation is digital, automated, and data-driven. Companies that actively shape this transformation turn the obligation to validate into a real opportunity for sustainable digitalization.
